What is Nursing?

Nursing focuses on the act of providing health care to all who are ill both physically and mentally. For the frontliners in the health sectors have various tasks to do such as; administering medication, wounds and treatment, performing physical exams, diagnostic tests, monitoring the patient’s vital signs and nurturing the recovery of all.

The jobs of the nurses are crucial as whenever there is a medical emergency, nurses are there to provide first aid. They help newborn babies take their first breaths and accompany the elderly when they take their last. They’re also the ones who provide a shoulder to cry on and counsel grieving family members when things get tough.

Due to the expansion and diversification of the healthcare industry, there are multiple fields and sectors for the nurses. There are currently more than 20 fields and nursing specialisations.

Field of Nursing

Provide care for newborns, children and young teens

Provide care for mothers before, during and after delivery

Provide care for the elderly

Treat patients in emergency situations during trauma or injury

Provide care for patients with eye disorders

Provide care for cancer patients

Minimum Requirements for a Degree in Nursing

  • You can choose to pursue a Degree in Nursing after 3 years of work experience as a RN if you want to specialise or increase your salary. You can use the knowledge you’ve gained from your working experience in your Degree studies when you are assigned to clinical training
  • Having a Degree would also mean that you would be qualified for career opportunities in non-hospital settings like teaching or consulting
  • There are certain nursing schools/institutions that offer scholarships to study for a Nursing course, so make sure you fulfil the academic requirements of the type of scholarships offered before applying for one
  • If you are on a full scholarship to study for your Nursing programme, you will be required to serve a certain number of years with the institute before you can take the next step to advance your Nursing career
